Metropolitan Garage began on a hillside in Goldstream Valley in 1997 as an unfinished single-bay shop, attached to an unfinished house belonging to the Levey family. It really was a garage with kids and ducks and chickens in the shop! In the past 20 years, Metropolitan Garage has become a leader in Alaska’s automotive industry, specializing in the Subaru, Toyota, and Honda families of cars. Specialization means the majority of cars are in and out in one day because parts are on hand.
In addition to serving Fairbanks by providing excellent automotive care, Metro Garage enjoys providing consistent support to community-building activities, everything from the Tanana River Challenge, to The Folk School, to Pinewood derbies. “We love undergirding the activities that make communities vibrant,” the Leveys said. “Public broadcasting is the glue that holds these Interior Alaska activities together. KUAC communicates the vigorous tone of these performances, games, campaigns—you name it. It’s how we get our information. Public broadcasting gives us cultural context. It is fuel for conversation, laughter, tenderness, and yes, debate.”
Metropolitan Garage loves hearing local voices sprinkled in with national ones because it connects this community personally with the world at large. “We consider KUAC support a big perk of our business.”
