KUAC’s annual Spring Fundraiser kicks off Saturday, March 7th 2015 with a poster-signing event featuring artwork titled “Caribou Night” by Fairbanks photo-artist Jennifer Moss, on its 32nd edition of the annual poster. The poster is a thank-you gift for donors who support KUAC’s public broadcasting mission. Moss will sign posters and chat with donors at a reception on March 7th from noon to 4 p.m. at Well Street Art Company in Fairbanks, at 1304 Well Street off Phillips Field Road.
The gouache (opaque watercolor paint) and graphite on Yupo (waterproof synthetic paper) piece is inspired by the long dark winters in Alaska which provide Moss with a blank canvas for her imagination. “My work consists of deconstructed layers of meaning that weave a narrative or concept through a graphically rich and colorful presentation” Moss said in her artist statement. “Pursuing a range of subject matter, stylistic approaches, and medium seems relevant to the variety of life’s experience. My work is influenced eclectically by things like graffiti art, woodland fungus, sweeping vistas, industrial design and ideas such as the passage of time, the insular nature of winter, and the impermanence of the moment.”
That uniqueness was a major factor in the decision made by KUAC’s volunteer selection committee who chose Moss’s piece, along with two other distinct submissions to put to public vote. Over 700 votes came in through the KUAC website which confirmed Moss’s “Caribou Night” as the favorite. Committee members were: artist Jill Marshall, Fairbanks Daily News-Miner features editor Gary Black, Morris Thompson Center executive director Cindy Schumaker, Fairbanks Children’s Museum executive director Brenda Riley, KUAC Community Advisory Council member Leslie Kitchin, UAF Rasmuson Library graphic designer Dixon Jones, and KUAC’s 2014 poster artist Iris Sutton.
Like KUAC’s 2014 poster artist Iris Sutton, whose winning entry “Raven and Ermine” was widely popular, Jennifer Moss joins many of Alaska’s renowned artists who have had their work selected for the KUAC poster, including: Ken Whitten, Sue Steinacher, Madara Hill, Cynthia West Hanson, Barry McWayne, Karen Franzen, Todd Sherman, Alvin Amason, Claire Fejes, Randall Compton, Byron Birdsall, David Mollett, Barbara LaVallee, Jon Van Zyle – and many more.
