Guys Read Gals Read, Inc. is KUAC’s featured sponsor for June.
They exist to show children that reading is fun and to inspire a lifetime of reading. When children read for fun, they’re more likely to read seriously and skillfully. Guys Read Gals Read exposes children to an array of books that are age appropriate and pleasurable to read.
Adult volunteers visit local schools during fourth grade lunch times to read well-written, heavily illustrated, kid-friendly books. It only takes 20 minutes and happens once or twice a week in the fall and winter. They donate copies of the featured books to the school libraries and also hold program parties at the public library featuring games, books and food.
“Inspiring kids to read for the fun of it is the prime mission of Guys Read Gals Read, but achieving that requires volunteer men and women who enjoy reading for pleasure,” said volunteer Greg Hill. “We’ve found KUAC a target-rich environment for reaching intelligent, informed and caring readers in Interior Alaska. It’s gratifying! Seeing the kids light up with interest over the books is a satisfying experience.” For more information or to find out how to become a volunteer, visit guysgalsread.org.
