KUAC’s November Featured Sponsor is Beaver Sports
Beaver Sports was founded in 1972 for the people of Fairbanks to get outdoors and explore! Jim Whisenhant, a local ski coach and Lathrop High School teacher, began the Beaver Sports journey with bringing canoes up to Fairbanks from the Lower 48 and selling them from his garage. He experienced a high demand for outdoor gear and quickly included running shoes, skis, tents and much more in his ordering.
Beaver Sports has been a big part of developing the outdoor scene in the Interior, especially around Fairbanks. Trails and infrastructure have been created and supported by Beaver Sports. In the 1950s and 60s, owner Jim Whisenhant, along with the Lathrop High School Ski Team, helped clear the UAF and Birch Hill trails for skiing in the winter. These trails are now a staple to the active people throughout our town. Buildings, lights and events have also been supported by Beaver Sports to bring more people to fall in love with the great outdoors. The Beaver Sports team wants our community to become healthier and more environmentally conscious and believes that being physically active makes you a nicer person both toward nature and the humans we share it with.
The current owner is Greg Whisenhant, Jim's eldest son. He loves being outdoors, spending at least a few hours almost every day on a run, hike, bike or ski with friends, family or athletes he coaches. He has a heart of gold and loves to give. He supports KUAC because they deliver up to date news and great educational programming, making our community members smarter, nicer and happier.
